The weight of history in Spain

It is impossible to ignore the evidence of Roman aqueducts, the splendor of Arab architecture in the south, the massive architectural testaments to the imperial centuries when Spain ruled Europe and the New World, or the incomparable richness of the art displayed in the country’s world-class museums...
        The old Spain: Cordoba

Córdoba has been one of Spain’s most important cities since Roman times.During the early Middle Ages it was the capital of al-Andalus (“Moorish Spain”) and forseveral centuries it was the largest and most cosmopolitan city in all of Western Europe.During the 11th and 12th centuries, many of the most significant figures ofthe era flocked to the city to seek the patronage of the Córdoban court and severalof the city’s architectural masterpieces were built, including the caliphal mosque (“La Mezquita”) and the medieval synagogue. In later centuries Córdoba continued to produce figures of note. The modern city encompasses fascinating contrasts between the old and the new.Within the old city walls, twisting alleyways form a virtual labyrinth amidst centuries-old buildings, while only a few blocks away broad, graceful tree-shaded avenues are packed with restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Tourists enjoy easy access to other major cultural centers in the region (Granada,Sevilla, Cádiz).

Córdoba has excellent connections to Madrid and Sevilla by meansof the AVE, a comfortable high-speed rail line, which takes exactly 1 hour and 40minutes to arrive in Madrid and 30 minutes to Sevilla.Córdoba is particularly festive in the spring, when superb weather enhancesnumerous cultural and social events. In May alone, events include the opening of allthe patios to the public, flamenco and Sevillana dances, a huge fair, the SemanaSanta pageants, and a blues festival. The University of CórdobaWith its mix of Jewish,Islamic, and Christian influences, it could be argued thatCórdoba is the oldest center of learning in Europe.
